Dundee Hockey Development Group

Dundee Hockey Development Group is made up of key representatives from local clubs, Dundee City Council, SportTayside, Midlands District, SHU and TFIS. The group is responsible for the coordination and development of hockey within the Dundee Area. A brief overview of the various roles and activities that DHDG undertake are given below.

Dundee Primary School Aged Hockey Festivals

The City Wide Hockey Festival will undergo a face lift for the 2005/6 session. New indoor and outdoor facilities will be introduced into the festival calendar making the city- wide festival more accessible to all primary schools within Dundee. The festival structure will be split into two sections: a participation section for teams that are new to hockey and are looking to become involved in hockey and a performance section for teams that are looking for a higher level of competition. The new structure has been devised and approved through extensive consultation with Education, SportTayside and Dundee Hockey Development Group.

Dundee Secondary School Aged Competitions

SportTayside in conjunction with Dundee City Council Education Development Services and supported by Dundee Sport Development section are running a league for secondary School aged pupils in the Dundee area.

The age groups that can take part in the leagues are S1–S2 and S3+,. The league is designed to let secondary schools and club teams participate in regular fun competition throughout the year.

Dundee Potential Hockey Squad

The purpose of the Dundee Potential Squad is to give talented players, aged between 14 and 18 the opportunity to enhance their skill levels to that of Midlands District and Impact Squad level.

The Dundee Potential squad will focus on core skill development work, warm up and cool down techniques, small sided games, 1v1, 2v1 and 4v2 principals, footwork exercises and general body conditioning. This has been achieved by delivering a specific training programme.

Dundee Mini Potential Hockey Squad

The purpose of the Mini Potential Squad is to give talented players, aged between 10 and 14 the opportunity to develop both their basic skill levels and their aspirations of achieving a higher level of play.

This has been achieved by delivering a specific training programme that consist of small sided games, 1v1 – 2v1 principals and basic skill drills.

To gain access to the squad, local clubs and schools nominate players to come along to two open trials. The squad is then selected from players who took part in the trials.

Coach Education and Development

SportTayside organise a wide range of coach education and development opportunities for hockey coaches, teachers and volunteers. These range from Scottish Hockey Union Awards to SportCoach UK courses and in-service training. Camps
  • Dundee City Council Sports Development Section, in partnership with Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club run a Mini Hockey Camp in the Summer for players ages between 10 and 14 years. The camp is designed for players of all abilities from beginners to intermediates.
  • Sporttayside in conjunction with Midlands Hockey Union run a Summer Hockey Camp for players aged between 14 and 18 years. This camp is suitable for experienced hockey players from club to Midlands District levels.
